Learning About Home Schools   no comments

Posted at 10:40 am in Education,Health & Fitness,Local

While getting a haircut today, I was sitting next to a nice woman, Gail, who was talking about home schooling with another woman in the waiting area. Not that I intended to eavesdrop, but they were talking across the room loudly and everyone could hear.

Turns out that she was having so much trouble with her public school about her son with ADHD and she could not afford a private school, that she withdrew him from school and is home schooling her son by herself. She had gone to college to be a teacher but had gotten married to someone in the military and they traveled so much that she could never take a job as a full time teacher.

Now they have settled in this area and their son is struggling with a lot of attention issues, which the teachers complain are disruptive. I thought that the schools were required to provide this child with the education suited to his needs. I do not agree with the idea that disruptive students must be sent home for homeschooling. Not every parent is equipped with the skills to teach their own children – many have jobs that they need to support their families and cannot stay home with their children.

I am going to have to get in touch with my local congressmen and see what is being done to help these children.

Belated Holiday Greeting   no comments

Got a nice card from an old friend today, Lindsay. She apologized for being late with the cards but she has had a lot going on at her house, so she wrote a nice long letter and enclosed it with the card.

Her husband was on his way home from work a couple of weeks before Christmas and some woman with two little kids on the car ran a stop sign and broadsided him. He has been in the hospital in traction since the accident. To top it all off, the woman who hit him did not have insurance.Of course, his car was totalled. Thankfully he was driving a big Mercury or his injuries could have been a lot worse.

I feel really bad for Lindsay and her family. Just when you least expect it, something catastrophic like this happens and your whole world grinds to a halt. Of curse, she is lucky that no one was killed. But that is small comfort when your husband is lying in a hospital bed and not able to work for an unknown length of time.

Star Wars Marathon   no comments

Not feeling very healthy today. I sure hope I don’t have the flu. I really don’t feel well at all. So today I’m staying home, sleeping on the couch, eating chicken noodle soup and keeping a big box of Puffs tissues close by. Sure glad I found a Star Wars marathon on cable today. That will make the time fly by, and if I fall asleep during the movie its no big deal.

Hot Enuff   no comments

Yes, it is hot enough for me. The temperature officially broke 100 degrees everywhere in Middle Tennessee. The weather report said that it felt like 125 degrees. Thankfully I was in an air conditioned office all day. I didn’t even want to go out lunch and deal with the heat – I just brown bagged it. We need a break from this heat – it’s only July. What on earth will August bring?

Cold Snap   no comments

The weather has been great – March has gone out like a lamb, so that saying has proven true once again. And the groundhog was right, too – we did have an early Spring. I am so glad to have this winter behind us and gone.

Although most of the week was warm days and days, we are having a little cold snap this weekend. It’s all good – you can’t mess with Mother Nature.
